This Design/Build project consisted of the demolition and removal of outdated radiation therapy equipment from a basement under-parking-lot radiation treatment suite, upgrade of the radiation suite (including all MEP work), and collaborating with the new equipment vendor for the installation of the new Tomotherapy equipment. Transfer of all demolition materials, old equipment and installation of new equipment was accomplished via design of a new opening cut in the asphalt and concrete parking lot immediately above the radiation treatment suite. The opening was covered by a newly designed removable skylight that was used for removal of demolition debris and for installation of new equipment. All work was completed immediately adjacent to a fully-operational radiation treatment control room and treatment room. Consequently, the most comprehensive ICRA and infection control precautions were installed and maintained throughout the project. Our staff understands the critical importance of communication with hospital clinical staff, as well as the Facilities personnel, in order to facilitate difficult, complex work during working hours, as well as during second shift work.
The very tight operating tolerances for removing and installing materials next to ICRA barriers required absolute attention to detail and work activity planning. By involving all constituencies in the planning process, surprises were eliminated and healthy working relationships with subcontractors, material suppliers and hospital staff were permanently established
